That is laughable to say the least. We do not include a robots.txt in the archive. When in doubt, blame it on SunShop I guess.

Lighten Up!
It is very possible that your hosting account came preloaded with this file. Either way, blaming SunShop isn’t going to solve your problems. Trust me, they didn’t put it there! But it’s there, and now it’s corrected. That’s the purpose of this forum – to solve problems – not point the finger! So lighten up a little, we’re here to help!

I don't get it. Is SunShop behind some conspiracy to prevent your site from being crawled? Think about the logic of that for a second. Why would sunshop go out of it's way to create a file that would prevent search engine bots from crawling it's cart?
I don't mind helping people, but I find it annoying that you haven't thanked anyone for their support but rather continue to point fingers. It's sunshop's fault that YOU didn't put comas in the keywords. It's sunshop's fault that YOU didn't put any meta description on your site, and now it's sunshop's fault for putting a robots.txt file on your server to prevent your site from getting crawled.
[shrug]. What can I say?Using SunShop 4.0 RC6

I apologize for my ranting. I like the product dont get me wrong. I guess the robots.txt file appears in a vanilla Apache web server install on Suse 10.1

Ah, okay. That makes sense.
Truthfully, what I said about SEO companies still stands. If they're leading you astray (as happens to many people) based on stuff that most people wouldn't know, it doesn't sounds so good to me. Just fixing your meta tags isn't going to do a whole lot for your rankings — and they should have pointed this out for you. I still include meta descriptions and keywords in my site builds, but they aren't the end-all and be-all of optimization.
Unfortunately, it's a "let the buyer beware" market.Diane Vigil - DianeV Web Design in Charlotte, North Carolina

I love the calls from SEO companies that tell me they can get me ranked on the first page of major search engines for $1000+. That must mean that they only plan to call 9 others and somehow be able to get all ten of us on the first page of google. My laughter is quickly followed up with a [click].

Well, there's the tip-off right there. I get those calls too (although I'm not sure if you're saying they're calling you rather than vice-versa). In my view, if they could do that well with search engine positioning, they wouldn't need to be cold-calling people to sell them on their services; their own website ought to be getting them quite enough business.I love the calls from SEO companies that tell me they can get me ranked on the first page of major search engines for $1000+. That said, they don't own search engines, and so cannot with any honesty guarantee specific rankings. They're probably either going to use paid rankings (PayPerClick, such as Google Adwords, for which you have to pay for every click) or ... promising something they can't deliver.Diane Vigil - DianeV Web Design in Charlotte, North Carolina

Re:NO SEO whatsoever
Page rating is Search Engine Result Page, the web page that a search engine returns with is the results of a search query. In other words if you search in Google search engines for “SEO Helpful Hints” and the search engine gives you a return of “seomarketing7.blogspot.com” number one on page one out of 80,500 sites then that is good page rating.

This has been very informative. Thanks to everyone for all of the information. I have been looking for a good SEO and have gotten so much bad information that I have given up. We set up sun shop about 3 months ago and we have seen more traffic on our site than ever before. Sunshop must be doing something right. I have given up on a SEO company and am going to let things keep going the way they are. Thanks! sunshop

I will just add, that after over 1-year of running SunShop 4.0, my search engine placement on Google and MSN have been top notch. Many times we will be on the first or second page for major products. We ONLY run a dynamic site, not static. We don't do any pay-per-clicks or other expense-related placements, just pure SEO. Turnkey has done an outstanding job with this IMO.

I agree with Pooch. I have been a SunShop user since 2003 and I have had favorable search engine results using dynamic pages. I have only recently begun experimenting with static pages.
During the last 13-years I have used plenty of shopping carts, from a basic cart that I developed myself to free carts like osCommerce to professional packages like X-Cart, and I find SunShop to be the most intuitive, feature rich, reliable shopping cart package available in this price range.Vic DeVore

We switched my wife's site to static from dynamic earlier this year and we did have some (as expected) issues for a few months but picked back up quickly as the search engines recrawled and reindexed our site and we are now performing very well with search engines. I have found that pages that I could not get indexed when we were on dynamic got quicker results on static, but that could be coincidence that I am doing more work on our site which results in the search engines crawling our site more frequently.
Besides helping my wife with her site, my real job is supporting internet marketing needs for my clients. I have about 7 years of hands-on experience with internet marketing and SEO and the way SunShop cart is set up I have to say it is fantastic and follows all SEO best practice guidelines. We spent 3 months researching carts before choosing SunShop due to my pickiness with SEO guidelines.
adlocksmith@cfl hopefully all the posts you have read replying to your original post has made you realize that the SEO firm that you spoke with was nuts. There is a lot of bad SEO information and bad SEO firms out there. If anyone promises you top rankings, for example, run away fast as possible.
Thanks,
Jay
